What is the capital of India?

Answer

New Delhi

New Delhi was announced in 1911, when the British moved the capital of India from Calcutta to Delhi and commissioned an entirely new administrative city beside the existing one. Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker laid it out with broad ceremonial avenues converging on a hill crowned by the viceroy's residence, now the president's house, in a style that grafted Indian domes and screens onto classical proportions. The choice of Delhi was not arbitrary: a succession of earlier capitals had stood on the same stretch of the Yamuna, including the Mughal city of Shahjahanabad with the Red Fort, and moving there associated British rule with that imperial lineage while distancing it from nationalist agitation in Bengal. After independence the new state simply inherited the buildings, so India's parliament and ministries sit in a purpose-built imperial capital, adjacent to and now administratively part of the wider Delhi metropolis.

New Delhi is a distinct district within the larger territory of Delhi rather than a separate city on its own.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • Mumbai. Mumbai is India's financial capital and home of the Hindi film industry, but not the seat of national government.
  • Kolkata. Kolkata was the capital of British India until the transfer was announced in 1911 and is now the capital of West Bengal.
  • Chennai. Chennai is the major southern port and capital of Tamil Nadu.
