An icebreaker only works if it is easy to answer. The questions here are built for that: no preparation, no personal disclosure, and no wrong answers. They suit the first five minutes of a meeting, the opening of a class, a training session, or the awkward moment when a group of people who barely know each other sit down together. Keep the round tight by setting a limit of one or two sentences per person and going in a fixed order so nobody is left waiting to be picked. If the group is large, split into pairs and swap answers, then ask two or three people to share what they heard.

Frequently asked questions

How long should an icebreaker take?

Five minutes for a small team. In a group over twelve, use pairs rather than one round of full-group answers.

What if someone does not want to answer?

Let them pass without comment. A question people can decline is a question people actually answer.

Do these work on video calls?

The Virtual category is written specifically for remote meetings, where visual prompts and short answers work best.
