Why clicking is harder than naming
Almost everyone can name more places than they can find. Naming works from a prompt, while placing requires a picture of the whole map with the gaps in the right positions. That is why a round of thirty-eight European countries produces scores in the twenties from people who could list all thirty-eight without pausing.
The maps are drawn from Natural Earth, a public-domain dataset, and projected into plain SVG when the site is built. There is no map library and nothing loads from another server, so the round works as soon as the page has.
