What is the capital of Liechtenstein?
Vaduz
Vaduz sits on the eastern bank of the upper Rhine, with the prince's castle perched on a wooded slope above the town and the Alps rising behind. The country is a survivor of the Holy Roman Empire: the Liechtenstein family, wealthy landowners in Austria and Moravia, bought two small lordships here in the early eighteenth century specifically because they were held directly from the emperor and therefore carried a seat in the imperial diet, which their existing estates did not. The purchased territory was combined and named after the family rather than the other way round, and it outlasted the empire that made it worth buying. Vaduz is small enough to walk across in minutes, but it holds the government, the parliament and the princely art collection, and the country's business is dominated by finance and precision manufacturing.
Liechtenstein is doubly landlocked, since both of its neighbours, Switzerland and Austria, are themselves landlocked.
Why the other answers are wrong
- Schaan. Schaan is the neighbouring municipality and is actually the country's most populous, but it is not the seat of government.
- Balzers. Balzers is a village in the south of the principality with a castle of its own.
- Triesen. Triesen is another Rhine-valley municipality between Vaduz and the southern border.
