What is the capital of Vietnam?

Answer

Hanoi

Hanoi has been a seat of power in the Red River delta for over a thousand years, founded as Thang Long, the city of the ascending dragon, when a Ly emperor moved his capital there in the eleventh century. Under French rule it became the administrative centre of Indochina, which left the boulevards, villas and opera house that still sit beside the tangled lanes of the old quarter. When the country was divided in 1954 it was the capital of the north while Saigon was the capital of the south, and after reunification in 1976 Hanoi became the capital of the whole country and Saigon was renamed Ho Chi Minh City. The division still shows: the northern capital keeps the ministries, the party institutions and a more reserved character, while the southern city drives commerce and remains the larger of the two.

Hue's citadel was modelled on Chinese imperial planning and suffered heavy damage during fighting in 1968.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • Ho Chi Minh City. Formerly Saigon, it was the capital of South Vietnam and is now the country's largest city and business centre.
  • Hue. Hue on the central coast was the imperial capital under the Nguyen dynasty, with a walled citadel and royal tombs.
  • Da Nang. Da Nang is a central coastal port and the third major city, without a capital history.
