What is the designated capital of Tanzania?

Answer

Dodoma

Tanzania decided in 1973 to move its capital from the coastal port of Dar es Salaam to Dodoma in the centre of the country, part of a broader policy of shifting attention and investment away from the coast and toward the rural interior. The move proved far harder than the decision. Funding was short, Dodoma lacked the infrastructure to absorb ministries and embassies, and for decades most of the government continued to operate from the coast while the transfer inched forward, with parliament sitting inland long before the executive followed. The relocation was pushed much more firmly in recent years and ministries have been moving in earnest. Dar es Salaam remains the largest city, the main port and the commercial centre, so the situation is a familiar one where the legal capital and the effective centre of national life are different places.

Zanzibar, an island group off the coast, has its own government within the union and its own historic capital at Stone Town.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • Dar es Salaam. Dar es Salaam is the former capital and remains Tanzania's largest city and principal Indian Ocean port.
  • Arusha. Arusha in the north is the base for safaris to the Serengeti and Ngorongoro and hosts regional institutions.
  • Mwanza. Mwanza is the main city on the Tanzanian shore of Lake Victoria.
