Which Australian bird can imitate chainsaws and camera shutters?

Answer

Lyrebird

The superb lyrebird has the most complex vocal apparatus of any songbird, and it uses it to copy whatever it hears often enough. Wild birds reproduce the calls of a dozen other species so accurately that the originals answer back. Near human activity the repertoire widens: car alarms, camera shutters, chainsaws and construction noise have all been recorded. The imitation is not idle. Males sing from cleared display mounds during courtship, and a wider, more precise repertoire signals experience, since it takes years to build. Young males learn largely from older males rather than from the original sources, which means a mimicked sound can persist in a population long after the thing that made it has gone. Some recorded imitations of logging equipment outlasted the logging.

The lyrebird takes its name from the male's tail, which fans into a shape resembling a lyre.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • Kookaburra. The kookaburra is famous for its own laughing call, not for copying others.
  • Cockatoo. Cockatoos can learn words in captivity but do not mimic environmental sound in the wild at anything like this range.
  • Emu. The emu is flightless and produces low booming and drumming sounds from an inflatable neck sac.
