Which city is South Africa's executive capital?

Answer

Pretoria

Pretoria holds the presidency, the cabinet offices and the foreign embassies, making it the administrative centre of the country under the three-capital arrangement agreed at union in 1910. It was founded in the middle of the nineteenth century by Voortrekkers and named after the leader Andries Pretorius, and it became the capital of the South African Republic, the Boer state whose conflict with Britain culminated in the South African War. That history is written into the city, from the Union Buildings on a ridge above it, designed by Herbert Baker with a curved colonnade and terraced gardens where presidential inaugurations are held, to the imposing Voortrekker Monument on the outskirts. The city is also known for the jacaranda trees that turn its streets purple in spring, and the surrounding metropolitan municipality carries the name Tshwane.

Nelson Mandela was inaugurated on the terraces of the Union Buildings, which have become the symbolic backdrop of the presidency.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • Cape Town. Cape Town is the legislative capital, where parliament sits, and the capital of the Western Cape province.
  • Bloemfontein. Bloemfontein is the judicial capital in the centre of the country.
  • Durban. Durban is the busiest port on the Indian Ocean coast and the largest city of KwaZulu-Natal, with no capital role.
