World Capitals Trivia Questions › this question
Which city is South Africa's judicial capital?
Bloemfontein
Bloemfontein completes the three-way division of capital functions, holding the Supreme Court of Appeal, which for most of the country's history was the highest court in the land. It sits in the middle of the country on the plains of the Free State, and it was the capital of the Orange Free State, one of the two Boer republics that joined the Cape and Natal colonies to form the union in 1910. Giving it the judiciary was part of the bargain that spread the institutions of the new state across the founding territories rather than concentrating them in one. The city has an outsized place in political history as well: the organisation that became the African National Congress was founded there in 1912. Under the post-apartheid constitution the Constitutional Court, which now stands at the top of the system, sits in Johannesburg instead.
The Constitutional Court, created after apartheid, sits in Johannesburg on the site of a former prison.
Why the other answers are wrong
- Cape Town. Cape Town is the legislative capital and home of parliament.
- Pretoria. Pretoria is the executive capital, with the presidency and government departments.
- Port Elizabeth. Port Elizabeth, part of the Nelson Mandela Bay municipality, is an Eastern Cape port city with no capital function.
