Which sea does the Suez Canal connect to the Mediterranean?

Answer

Red Sea

The Suez Canal cuts across the Isthmus of Suez, the narrow neck of land joining Africa to Asia, linking the Mediterranean at Port Said with the Red Sea at Suez and from there to the Indian Ocean. Before it opened in 1869 after a decade of excavation led by Ferdinand de Lesseps, cargo between Europe and Asia had to round the Cape of Good Hope, adding thousands of kilometres. The route is unusual among great canals in requiring no locks, because the two seas sit at close enough to the same level and the terrain in between is flat and low, with lakes along the way that the engineers incorporated into the channel. The canal has been strategically explosive ever since, closed by war more than once and central to the 1956 Suez Crisis, and modern shipping remains so dependent on it that a single vessel wedged sideways can disrupt global trade.

Species have migrated from the Red Sea into the Mediterranean through the canal, a movement biologists call Lessepsian migration after its builder.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • Black Sea. The Black Sea already connects to the Mediterranean through the Bosphorus and Dardanelles, far to the north in Turkey.
  • Arabian Sea. The Arabian Sea lies beyond the Red Sea, reached only after passing the strait at Bab-el-Mandeb.
  • Caspian Sea. The Caspian is landlocked in Central Asia with no natural outlet to any ocean.
