90s Trivia Questions
From Nevermind to Netscape, Tamagotchi to Titanic. Play the 90s trivia round, then read every question and answer below.
Keys 1-4 pick an answer, Enter moves on. Nothing is saved to an account.
The 1990s is the decade people are still arguing about, partly because so much of it is still around. The internet moved from universities into living rooms, video games got a third dimension, and a Seattle guitar band knocked the previous decade's polish off the charts. It was also a decade of large political turns: the Soviet Union dissolved, apartheid ended, Hong Kong changed hands and the European Union came into being.
That mix is what makes 90s trivia work. A single round can jump from Tamagotchi to the Maastricht Treaty and still feel like one subject, because for anyone who was there the two sit side by side in the same memory of the same years.

Common mistakes in 90s trivia
- The Y2K bug turned out to be a hoax because nothing happened.
The problem was real and governments and companies spent years rewriting date handling before 2000. The quiet rollover was the result of that work, not proof it was unnecessary.
- The Soviet Union collapsed when the Berlin Wall came down in 1989.
The wall opened in November 1989, but the USSR was formally dissolved in December 1991.
- Toy Story was the first animated feature film.
It was the first feature animated entirely by computer. Hand-drawn animated features had existed since the 1930s.
- Dolly the sheep was the first cloned animal.
Animals had been cloned from embryonic cells before. Dolly was the first mammal cloned from an adult body cell.
- Google was the first internet search engine.
Search engines such as Archie, Lycos, AltaVista and Yahoo came earlier. Google, founded in 1998, won on ranking quality rather than by arriving first.
Running this round at a quiz night
Rotate the themes rather than running them in blocks, so the music fans and the technology players score in the same round. Alternate one music, one film or television, one technology, one news question and keep the pace brisk: nineties questions are recognition questions, and long pauses kill them. The dispute this topic always causes is release dates, because films and albums often reached the UK a year after the US. Word answers as the year of first release and say which country you mean when you read the question. For a tiebreaker use a fixed date nobody memorises, such as the year the web was put in the public domain.
Frequently asked questions
Is this round only about pop culture?
No. Roughly half is music, film, television and toys, and the rest covers politics, science and technology, from the Hubble launch to the dissolution of the Soviet Union. The mix is deliberate so that no single kind of knowledge sweeps the board.
Why are there so many date questions?
Because the 1990s blur. Most players can name the event instantly but place it two or three years out, so asking for the year turns an easy question into a real one without needing obscure material.
Can I split this into rounds for a quiz night?
Yes. The set is already divided into fourteen easy, fourteen medium and fourteen hard, which works cleanly as three rounds. The short note under each answer gives a host something to say when revealing it.
Not in a quiz mood?
The question games are a different kind of round: no right answers, just prompts you read out and argue about. Would You RatherNever Have I EverTruth or DareThis or That
