Which Chinese dynasty produced the Terracotta Army?

Answer

The Qin

The Terracotta Army belongs to the Qin dynasty, buried near the tomb of Qin Shi Huang, the ruler who conquered the rival warring states and became the first emperor of a unified China in 221 BC. His reign was short but consequential: he standardised writing, weights, measures and even the axle width of carts, linked earlier frontier walls, and imposed a centralised administration of appointed officials in place of hereditary nobility. The buried army of thousands of life-sized figures, with horses, chariots and weapons, was meant to serve him after death. The figures were mass-produced from moulded parts, arms, legs, torsos, then individually finished, which is why they look distinct without each having been sculpted from scratch, and they were originally painted in bright colours that faded on exposure to air. Farmers digging a well rediscovered them in 1974; the emperor's burial mound itself remains largely unexcavated.

The English name China is generally traced back to Qin.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • The Han. The Han dynasty followed the Qin and ruled for four centuries, giving the majority Chinese ethnic group its name.
  • The Ming. The Ming ruled from the fourteenth to the seventeenth century and built the Forbidden City and much of the Great Wall as it stands today.
  • The Tang. The Tang dynasty is remembered for cosmopolitan trade along the Silk Road and a golden age of poetry.
