Three wrong clicks and the answer is highlighted, so a stuck round keeps moving.

Clicking a country on a blank map is a harder test than naming it from a list, because recognition and placement are different kinds of memory. Most people can name thirty European countries and place perhaps twenty.

The Balkans are where rounds fall apart. Six countries sit in the space most mental maps give to two, and Slovenia, Slovakia and Serbia are close enough in name that people click confidently and wrongly. The Baltic three are the other classic: Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania run north to south in alphabetical order, which is the only mnemonic anyone needs.

Andorra, Malta, Monaco, San Marino and Liechtenstein are left out: at this scale they are smaller than the cursor, and an unclickable answer is worse than a missing one.

Frequently asked questions

Which European countries are hardest to place?

The Balkans and the Baltics. Six Balkan states occupy a small area that most mental maps simplify, and the three Baltic states are routinely swapped.

Why are some microstates missing?

Monaco, San Marino, Liechtenstein and the Vatican are too small to render as a clickable shape at this scale, so the round leaves them out rather than making them unclickable.

Is Turkey counted as Europe here?

No. The round uses the countries usually taught as European; Turkey and the Caucasus states sit outside it, which is a convention rather than a fact.
