The Olympics are a gift to quiz writers because so much of the material is permanently fixed. A host city stays a host city. The distance of the marathon has not moved since 1908. The rings, the flame, the parade order and the motto are all matters of published rule rather than opinion. This round leans on that: no medal tables, no who-won-the-most, nothing that a single afternoon of competition could overturn. Instead it works through the ancient games at Olympia, the revival in Athens in 1896, the cities that have held Summer and Winter editions, and the sports and terms that come with them. The easy band is symbols and recent hosts, the medium band spreads across the twentieth century, and the hard band goes to the early Games and the small print.

Common mistakes in olympics trivia

  • The Olympic rings each stand for a specific continent by colour.

The five rings represent the inhabited continents together. No colour was assigned to any one continent, and the colours were chosen so every national flag then in use contained at least one.

  • The torch relay from Olympia is an ancient tradition.

The flame is lit at Olympia, but the long relay to the host city was introduced for the 1936 Berlin Games. The ancient festival had no such relay.

  • The ancient Olympics were cancelled during wars.

A truce protected travel to the ancient Games rather than stopping them. It was the modern Games of 1916, 1940 and 1944 that were cancelled by war.

  • Winners at the ancient Olympics received gold medals.

The prize was a wreath of wild olive. Medals in gold, silver and bronze belong to the modern Games.

  • The Summer and Winter Games have always been held in the same year.

They shared a year until 1992. From 1994 the Winter Games were shifted so the two now alternate every two years.

Running this round at a quiz night

Host cities carry an Olympic round, but do not stack them, or teams stop guessing. Alternate a host city with a symbol or tradition, then an event, then something from the ancient Games. Pacing matters because the city questions are quick, so give the older history a beat longer. Two disputes come up. First, which Games count: say modern Games and give the year, and treat cancelled wartime editions as cancelled rather than held. Second, Summer against Winter, so name which you mean in the question itself, not the answer. Cities that hosted more than once need the year attached. For the tiebreaker use the year the International Olympic Committee was founded.

Frequently asked questions

Why are there no questions about the all-time medal leaders?

Because those lists change every four years, and a quiz that gives last cycle's answer is simply wrong. Host cities, rules and symbols stay put, so the questions here are built from those instead.

Why are the Winter and Summer Games no longer in the same year?

They were held in the same year until 1992. The Winter Games were then shifted by two years, starting with Lillehammer in 1994, so the Olympic Movement would have a major event every two years rather than a four-year gap.

Were the ancient Olympics really held every four years?

Yes, the four-year interval is ancient, and the Greeks used it as a unit of time called an Olympiad. The ancient festival ran for centuries at Olympia before being discontinued in late antiquity.
