The Office Trivia Questions

Questions on the American version of The Office, which ran from 2005 to 2013 in a Scranton paper branch. A British original exists, so every question here means the US series unless it says otherwise.

The American Office follows the staff of a struggling paper company branch in Scranton, Pennsylvania, filmed as though a documentary crew had been embedded there for years. Developed by Greg Daniels from the British series by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, it ran for nine seasons and grew a much larger cast and a far longer set of storylines than the original.

That makes it good quiz material and slightly treacherous. Two versions of the show exist, with different character names, a different company and a different setting, so a question that does not say which one it means is an argument waiting to happen. Every question in this round is written for the American series, and the ones that touch the British original say so plainly. Each answer carries a short note giving the reason it is correct.

Common mistakes in the office trivia

  • The American series is a straight remake of the British one.

Only the first season closely follows the original scripts. From season two the US show ran nine seasons of its own stories, far beyond the fourteen episodes made in Britain.

  • Dwight is the assistant regional manager.

His actual title is assistant to the regional manager. The joke is that he drops the middle words whenever nobody corrects him.

  • Dwight takes over as branch manager as soon as Michael leaves.

Andy Bernard gets the job after Michael and Deangelo Vickers depart. Dwight is only made manager in the final season.

  • Steve Carell appears in all nine seasons.

He leaves partway through season seven and returns only briefly at the very end of the series.

  • Creed Bratton is only a character name.

The actor is also named Creed Bratton, and he was a guitarist with the band The Grass Roots before the show.

Running this round at a quiz night

Say "the American version" out loud at the start, because a British original exists and one player will always answer with David Brent or Wernham Hogg. Mix the themes rather than stacking every question on Michael: the branch structure, the recurring gags and the guest bosses spread the marks around a table with different favourite seasons. Expect disputes over job titles and who ran the branch when, so keep a season number in the wording. The reliable argument is whether Creed Bratton is the actor or the character, and the answer is both. Use the tiebreakers only for a genuine draw, closest guess winning.

Frequently asked questions

Should a quiz mix the British and American versions?

Only if you say so before the round starts. The two shows share a premise but almost nothing else, so mixing them silently produces answers that are right about the wrong programme.

How many Office questions make a good round?

Eight to ten for a themed round inside a general quiz. If you are running a full Office night, build the rounds by theme rather than by season, so nobody's favourite era decides the whole result.

Which questions work for people who only watched the early seasons?

Stick to the easy band and the running gags. Anything about Sabre, Robert California or Andy's time as manager assumes the later seasons, so save those for the hard round and warn the room.
