Harry Potter Trivia Questions
Hogwarts houses, wand lore, book titles and the people who fill them. Play the round, then read every question and answer below.
Keys 1-4 pick an answer, Enter moves on. Nothing is saved to an account.
Harry Potter trivia divides neatly into what a casual reader absorbs and what only a rereader retains. Houses, the platform number and the name of the school stay with almost everyone. Wand cores, the composition of the Marauders and the difference between the Order of the Phoenix and Dumbledore's Army do not.
This set moves through the seven books in roughly that order of difficulty, and it deliberately favours facts that are the same in the novels and the films: names, places, spells and plot events rather than lines of dialogue. Where the books and films differ, the question either avoids the point or names the book. Titles are asked as titles, and no passage is quoted, so the round works whether you read the series or watched it.

Common mistakes in harry potter trivia
- Harry, Ron and Hermione are the only three main characters in Gryffindor.
Neville Longbottom, Ginny Weasley and the Weasley twins are all Gryffindors too. Neville in particular becomes central to the final book.
- Hufflepuff's emblem is a bear.
Hufflepuff's emblem is a badger. The house colours are yellow and black.
- The first book is called The Sorcerer's Stone everywhere.
Only the US edition uses Sorcerer's Stone. The original UK title, and the title used in most other English-speaking countries, is Philosopher's Stone.
- Hedwig is a barn owl.
Hedwig is a snowy owl. She is bought for Harry by Hagrid at Eeylops Owl Emporium in Diagon Alley.
- Voldemort made seven Horcruxes on purpose.
He intended to make six and keep the seventh piece of his soul in his own body. Harry became an unintended Horcrux, bringing the total of external pieces to seven.
Running this round at a quiz night
Harry Potter rounds draw devoted fans and casual viewers, so mix the themes: two house or Hogwarts questions, two characters, one spell and one place keeps both groups in the game. Expect disputes between book and film details; say before the round that answers follow the books unless a question names a film. The first book's title differs between the UK and US editions, so accept either. Spell names cause spelling arguments, so mark on sound rather than letters. Keep the easy questions brisk. For a tiebreaker, ask for the publication year of the first book or the number of chapters in it; nobody knows exactly, so closest guess settles it cleanly.
Frequently asked questions
Do the questions follow the books or the films?
Both, wherever they agree. The set sticks to names, places, spells and plot events that are identical in the novels and the eight films. Points where the adaptations diverge are avoided so that neither audience is penalised.
Why are there seven books but eight films?
The final novel, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, was adapted as two separate films released in 2010 and 2011. Every earlier book got a single film, so the count is seven books and eight films.
Is the first book called Philosopher's Stone or Sorcerer's Stone?
Both titles are correct depending on where it was published. The original 1997 British edition is Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone; the American edition released the following year changed it to Sorcerer's Stone.
