Marvel trivia works on two separate tracks that only partly overlap. One is the comics: a publishing house founded in 1939, renamed twice, and reinvented in the early 1960s by a small group of writers and artists who produced most of the characters that are still in use. The other is the film series that began in 2008 and made those characters familiar to people who have never opened a comic.

This set covers both. The easy band is character recognition that works either way. The medium band moves into film casting, release order and the creators most people can name. The hard band goes into publishing history: original titles, debut years, and which artist actually drew the first issue, which is where credit is most often misremembered.

Common mistakes in marvel trivia

  • Stan Lee created the Marvel characters on his own.

Lee co-created them with artists. Jack Kirby co-created the Fantastic Four, the X-Men and Black Panther, and Steve Ditko co-created Spider-Man and Doctor Strange.

  • Iron Man was the first Marvel character to get a big-budget film.

Blade (1998), X-Men (2000) and Spider-Man (2002) all came earlier. Iron Man in 2008 was simply the first film of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

  • Wolverine and the X-Men were always part of the Avengers films.

The X-Men film rights were held by 20th Century Fox until Disney acquired the studio in 2019, so the mutants were absent from the earlier Marvel Studios films.

  • Captain America's shield is pure vibranium.

In the comics the shield is a unique vibranium-steel alloy that was never successfully reproduced. Only the films describe it as plain vibranium.

  • Marvel has always been called Marvel Comics.

The company was founded as Timely Comics in 1939 and was widely known as Atlas in the 1950s. The Marvel Comics name took hold in the early 1960s.

Running this round at a quiz night

Marvel splits a room between comic readers and film fans, so alternate the two: a hero or villain question, then a casting or release question, then a creator. Say at the start whether answers follow the comics or the films, because origins, costumes and even who is on a team differ between them. Actor questions cause disputes when a role has been recast, so name the film in the question. Comic first-appearance years are the usual argument; use cover dates and say so. Keep creator questions to the hard slot. For the tiebreaker, ask the Amazing Fantasy issue number or Stan Lee's birth year; both are fixed and the guesses spread nicely.

Frequently asked questions

Did Stan Lee create all these characters by himself?

No. Lee was the editor and co-writer on most of the 1960s Marvel titles, but the characters were co-created with artists who designed and often plotted them, chiefly Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko. Modern credits normally list both names.

Why are some Marvel characters in films made by other studios?

Marvel licensed film rights to individual characters during the 1990s, before it made its own films. That is why Spider-Man and the X-Men appeared in Sony and Fox productions while the Marvel Cinematic Universe was built around the characters Marvel still controlled.

Are the comics and the films the same continuity?

They are not. The films adapt the comics freely and often change origins, allegiances and creators of in-universe technology. Where this set asks a question that differs between the two, it says which version it means.
