Tolkien published The Hobbit in 1937 and followed it with the three volumes of The Lord of the Rings in 1954 and 1955. Peter Jackson's films arrived between 2001 and 2003 and reached a far larger audience, which is why quiz answers so often split along book-and-film lines rather than right-and-wrong ones.

This round leans into that. Most questions work for either version, and where the two genuinely differ the question states which one it means. The easy band covers the Fellowship, the Shire and Mount Doom; the medium band moves through the realms and the film cast; and the hard band goes into the adaptation changes, the Stewards of Gondor and the publication dates. Each answer carries a short note, which usually settles the argument before it starts.

Common mistakes in lord of the rings trivia

  • Arwen rescues Frodo at the Ford of Bruinen in the book.

In the novel it is the Elf-lord Glorfindel who finds Frodo and sets him on the horse. The films gave the scene to Arwen to expand a role that is small in the book.

  • Tom Bombadil is cut only from the theatrical films but appears in the extended editions.

He does not appear in any version of Jackson's trilogy. The whole Old Forest and Barrow-downs sequence was left out of the adaptation.

  • Aragorn kills the Witch-king.

Éowyn strikes the killing blow on the Pelennor Fields, after Merry wounds him from behind with a Barrow-blade.

  • The Lord of the Rings was written as three separate novels.

Tolkien wrote it as one long book. The publisher split it into three volumes for economic reasons, which is why the volume divisions fall where they do.

  • Sting was forged for Frodo.

Bilbo found it in a troll hoard in The Hobbit and later passed it to Frodo at Rivendell, along with the mithril mail.

Running this round at a quiz night

The one rule that saves a Tolkien round is to name your source. Say "in the book" or "in the film" in the question itself, because the differences are exactly where arguments start: Arwen replacing Glorfindel at the Ford, Faramir's behaviour in Ithilien, the missing Scouring of the Shire, and Tom Bombadil's absence. Mix the themes so book readers and film watchers both score, and keep the place-name questions in the middle where they suit everyone. Expect one player to correct your pronunciation of an Elvish name; accept phonetic answers on paper. Save the three tiebreakers for a genuine draw.

Frequently asked questions

Should a quiz round use the books or the films?

Both, as long as each question names its source. The films changed characters and cut whole chapters, so a question that leaves it open has two defensible answers and will cost you the round in arguments.

Which differences cause the most disputes?

Arwen replacing Glorfindel at the Ford, Faramir taking the hobbits towards Osgiliath, the absence of Tom Bombadil, and the missing Scouring of the Shire. Naming the version in the question removes all four.

Can I include The Hobbit and The Silmarillion?

One or two questions from The Hobbit are fair, since most people know it. The Silmarillion is specialist material and will lock out most of the room, so keep it out unless everyone playing has read it.

Not in a quiz mood?
