The seven-continent model is what most English-speaking countries teach, but it is a convention rather than a fact of geology. Parts of Europe teach six, merging North and South America; Japan and parts of eastern Europe also use six, merging Europe and Asia into Eurasia.

The last entry causes the most trouble. Australia is the continent's landmass, Oceania is the wider region including New Zealand and the Pacific islands, and both are accepted here.

Frequently asked questions

Is it Australia or Oceania?

Australia is the continental landmass; Oceania is the broader region that also covers New Zealand and the Pacific islands. Both answers count here.

Why do some countries teach six continents?

Different traditions merge different pairs. Some combine the Americas, others combine Europe and Asia as Eurasia. No single scheme is more correct than another.

Is Antarctica really a continent?

Yes. It has a continental crust and is larger than Europe or Australia, even though it has no permanent population.
