Canada has ten provinces and three territories, and the distinction matters. Provinces hold their powers directly under the constitution; territories are governed under authority delegated by the federal parliament, which is why the two are usually counted separately.
The eastern end causes most of the stalling. The four Atlantic provinces are easy to confuse with each other, and Newfoundland and Labrador is often given by its first half alone, which leaves out the mainland portion of the name.

Frequently asked questions
Why are the territories not included?
Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut are governed under powers delegated by the federal parliament rather than held directly, so they are counted separately.
Is Newfoundland alone accepted?
Yes, though the full name is Newfoundland and Labrador. The province was renamed in 2001 to include the mainland part.
Which provinces do people forget?
The Atlantic four blur together, and Saskatchewan is often lost next to its neighbour Manitoba.
Prefer multiple choice?
