Name All the Planets of the Solar System
Eight planets in order of distance from the Sun. This one is a warm-up, not a test.

Since 2006 the answer has been eight rather than nine. Pluto was reclassified as a dwarf planet after astronomers agreed that a planet must clear its orbital neighbourhood of other bodies, and Pluto shares its region with the rest of the Kuiper Belt.
The four inner planets are small and rocky, the four outer ones are large and gaseous, and the asteroid belt sits at the boundary between the two groups. That split is not decoration: it reflects how far from the young Sun ice could survive while the planets were forming.

Frequently asked questions
Why is Pluto not on the list?
It was reclassified as a dwarf planet in 2006 because it has not cleared its orbit of other objects. It is still there, just in a different category.
Which planet is hottest?
Venus, not Mercury. A thick carbon dioxide atmosphere traps heat, so Venus stays hotter than the planet closer to the Sun.
How do you remember the order?
Most people use a sentence whose word initials match the planets. Any phrase works as long as it starts M, V, E, M, J, S, U, N.
Prefer multiple choice?
