Answers register as you type, so there is nothing to submit. Spelling counts, capitals and punctuation do not.

Flags are the purest recall test on the site, because there is nothing to reason from. You either recognise the pattern or you do not, and the ones that catch people out are always the neighbours: Ireland beside Italy, Chad beside Romania, Indonesia flipped into Poland.

A few families explain most of the board. The Nordic cross runs across Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Iceland, all the same shape in different colours. The pan-African red, gold and green and the pan-Arab red, white, black and green each repeat across a dozen countries, which is why guessing by colour alone fails. Nepal is the one flag on earth that is not a rectangle.

Common short forms are accepted, so USA, UK and UAE all count.

Frequently asked questions

Which flags do people confuse most?

Ireland and Italy, which differ only in one stripe colour; Indonesia and Poland, which are the same two bands inverted; and Chad, Romania and Moldova, which are nearly identical.

Why do so many flags share the same colours?

Pan-African and pan-Arab colour schemes were adopted deliberately as statements of shared identity, so a dozen countries use the same palette in different arrangements.

Do I have to type the full official name?

No. Common names and the usual abbreviations are accepted, so USA, UK, UAE, Holland and Britain all register.

Prefer multiple choice?
