The first ninety-four elements occur naturally on Earth, at least in traces. Everything from americium upward exists only because someone made it in a laboratory, usually a few atoms at a time, and several of those atoms decayed before anyone could weigh them.

The table was completed in 2016, when nihonium, moscovium, tennessine and oganesson were formally named and the seventh row was filled. That is why 118 is a stable answer rather than a moving target: extending it means synthesising an element nobody has managed yet.

Spelling is where this round is won and lost. Both the international and American spellings are accepted, so aluminium and aluminum, sulfur and sulphur, caesium and cesium all count.

Frequently asked questions

How many chemical elements are there?

118 are named and confirmed. The last four were formally named in 2016, which completed the seventh row of the periodic table.

Which elements occur naturally?

The first 94, though some of the heavier ones exist only in tiny traces. Everything above plutonium has only ever been made in a laboratory.

Is aluminum or aluminium correct?

Both. Aluminium is the international standard spelling and aluminum is the American one. This round accepts either, along with sulfur and sulphur.

Prefer multiple choice?

The trivia rounds give you four options and an explanation after every answer. General KnowledgeGeographyScienceHistory
