Thirty franchises in two conferences of fifteen. The league reached that number in 2004 with the arrival of the Charlotte Bobcats, since renamed the Hornets, which is one of several name swaps that make this round harder than it looks.
New Orleans and Charlotte effectively traded identities: the original Hornets moved to New Orleans, became the Pelicans, and the Hornets name went back to Charlotte. The Jazz still carry a name that made sense in New Orleans and none at all in Utah, and the Lakers kept theirs after leaving Minneapolis and its lakes for Los Angeles.

Frequently asked questions
How many NBA teams are there?
Thirty, split evenly between the Eastern and Western Conferences. The league has been that size since 2004.
Why is the Utah team called the Jazz?
The franchise started in New Orleans, where the name fit, and kept it after moving to Salt Lake City in 1979.
Do nicknames count on their own?
Yes. Typing Celtics or Knicks is enough, and full names work as well.
